When I first started playing chess I would watch any chess movie I could get my hands on. The movie ends with an overwhelming sense of victory as this young girl realizes her dreams and is able to buy a home for her family. Phiona’s mother plays a big role in the story and although she’s against Phiona playing the game, she eventually comes around and embraces his daughter for who she is. The film follows Phiona’s ups and downs as she struggles to master a game while enduring life in the slums of Katwe. Mira Nair’s disarmingly amiable and vibrantly real Queen of Katwe, another David Oyelowo-starrer, represents a more likely possibility (albeit, still a long shot) for the actor in the role of a chess coach, as well as for the 12 Years A SlaveOscar winner Lupita Nyong’o, in the role of the mother of a Ugandan chess prodigy (played by Madina. I’d consider Queen Of Katwe one of the must-see chess movies.
